The Virginian-Pilot Scholarship and Recognition Program

The Virginian-Pilot recognizes top academic achievers in our community by publishing a special Scholastic Achievement section as a part of our Virginian-Pilot Scholastic Achievement Scholarship and Recognition Program. Area high schools nominate their scholastic team of sophomores, juniors and seniors for recognition based on academic excellence, leadership and service. The Scholastic Achievement section publishes annually in The Virginian-Pilot in May.

In addition to giving recognition, The Virginian-Pilot awards scholarships and administers additional scholarships provided by sponsors. Local schools select a senior who may apply for scholarships. A panel of judges selects scholarship finalists based on a candidate’s ambitions, achievements, extracurricular activities and financial need.

And the 2013 winners include:

Cody Robertson of Grassfield High School
The Virginian-Pilot $10,000 Scholarship

Kermit Farrow, Jr. of Cape Hatteras Secondary School
The Virginian-Pilot Runner-Up $5,000 Scholarship

Emily Egress of Hickory High School
The Virginian-Pilot Runner-Up $5,000 Scholarship

Anne Magpayo of Granby High School
Taste of India/AAPI $5,000 Scholarship

Sierra Banks of JP Knapp Early College High School
Dillard's $3,000 Samaritan Scholarship

Congratulations to the winners! The Pilot's annual Scholastic Achievement & Recognition section will publish Saturday, May 25th.

Pilot scholarships will be awarded directly to the college the student chooses to attend.
