The Virginian-Pilot is the Number 1 source of news, information, entertainment and advertising in Southeast Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Every day, we put news and information in the hands of our readers, empowering them to make their lives better as a 24/7, multi-platform media company. The 146-year-old flagship paper, a Pulitzer-prize-winning metro serving over 307,000 readers a day, has been named "best paper in the state of Virginia" for 28 of the past 34 years. We launched one of the first newspaper websites in the country and have grown that audience to more than 100,000 daily visitors.

Our diverse, multimedia portfolio includes the commonwealth's best daily newspaper, the region's most visited websites, a direct marketing company, an events company and multiple weekly and monthly print publications.

Our History

Landmark's (parent company of The Virginian-Pilot) founder was Samuel L. Slover, Frank Batten's uncle and Frank Batten Jr.'s great-uncle. For half a century, Samuel L. Slover was a dominant figure in Virginia newspaper publishing circles. During his 86 years he owned or controlled six of the commonwealth's largest newspapers, headed numerous other business and civic enterprises and exerted influence on Virginia politics.

Slover's goal was to own and organize the newspapers on the south side of Hampton Roads. Slover reached his goal through a series of purchases and mergers resulting in what is now The Virginian-Pilot.
